History of Glass (I)

Naturally occurring glass, such as obsidian, has been used since the Stone Age. The first documented glass making is in Egypt around 2000 BC, when glass was first used as a glaze for pottery and other items. In the first century BC the technique of blowing glass was developed and what had once been an extremely rare and valuable item became much more common. During the Roman Empire many forms of glass were created, mostly for use in vases and bottles. Early glass was quite green due to iron impurities in the sand used in its production. Common glass today usually has a slight green tint, arising from these same impurities.

Glass objects from the 7th and 8th centuries have been found on the island of Torcello near Venice. These form an important link between Roman times and the later importance of that city in the production of the material. About 1000 CE, an important technical breakthrough was made in Northern Europe when soda glass was replaced by glass made from a much more readily available material: potash obtained from wood ashes. From this point on, northern glass differed significantly from that made in the Mediterranean area, where soda remained in common use.
